Hundreds of couples renew wedding vows in London ceremony

Hundreds of couples all renewed their wedding vows in a mass celebration at Westminster Cathedral over the weekend.

Some 700 couples, with more than 43,000 years of wedded bliss between them, celebrated their unions in the capital on Saturday.

Among the group were 29 couples who have been married more than 60 years, with the shortest marriage lasting a decade.

Married couples marked their tenth, 25th, 30th, 40th, 50th and 60th anniversaries at the event.

The service, which was presided over by Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, aimed to serve as a reminder of the importance of marriage.

Speaking to the Press Association, Gerry Fergus, who has been married to his wife Beryl for almost 40 years, said: "Marriage keeps you together and keeps the family together. There's no secret to a long marriage, you just keep going."

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, another high-profile wedding celebration was taking place.

President George Bush's daughter Jenna married fiance Henry Hager in a private ceremony at her family's ranch in Texas.
