The demise of the wedding DJ
Due to the increasing use of digital technology, especially iPods and mp3s, the wedding DJ may be heading towards extinction, according to an article in the Times.
Those tying the knot these days are just as likely to compile their own list of songs from the music present on their computers. Then it is a relatively simple matter to pipe it through a sound system.
The wedding DJ, with his repetoire of cheesy songs and humorous asides, has become something of an institution at most English weddings, though it seems he may soon be left behind.
Carole Midgley writes: "Modern couples are tiring of the traditional cheesy disc jockey, invariably called Gaz.
"In the past year more than two thirds of couples who held their reception at Manchesters posh Lowry Hotel opted to hang the DJ and the trend for DIY disco is growing nationwide.
However, Ms Midgely continues by saying that if the wedding DJ becomes extinct then many may end up missing him as people's weddings "can be tedious affairs" and the jocular bonhomie of the DJ adds a humorous, if slightly ridiculous tinge to the milieu.
Meanwhile, there were no deaths reported as a boat carrying wedding guests sank in the Nile over the weekend, reports the BBC.
