Candlelit tables, twinkling fairy lights, gorgeous seasonal flowers and a dancefloor that keeps everyone warm. What's not to love about a winter wedding?
There's something about getting married in the colder months that feels a little extra special. You can lean into cosy details, go all out with the lighting and create an atmosphere that feels like one big celebration.
But before you get carried away pinning images of snowy wedding venues and festive tablescapes, there are a few things worth thinking about. Because while a winter wedding can look like something straight off Pinterest, you'll want to make sure it works just as well in real life.
Here's what to consider when planning your winter wedding.
1. The sun sets early… really early!
One minute it's lunchtime, the next it's practically pitch black. Winter daylight doesn't hang around for long, so you'll need to be a little clever with your timings.
If those dreamy outdoor wedding photographs are high on your wish list, speak to your photographer about when you'll need to step outside. You might want to bring your ceremony forward or schedule your couple portraits before the wedding breakfast.
And don't worry if you miss the daylight. Evening photographs with twinkling lights and a beautifully lit venue can be just as lovely.
2. Your outfit might need a winter wardrobe upgrade
A stunning wedding dress is a given, but nobody wants to spend their wedding day freezing!
Winter is the perfect excuse to add something extra to your bridal look. Think elegant capes, faux-fur wraps, tailored coats, long sleeves or a statement jacket for the evening.
And if you're planning to take photographs outside, consider having a second pair of shoes ready. Those beautiful heels might not be quite so practical on a frosty lawn!
3. Give your guests a warm welcome
Imagine arriving at a winter wedding after battling the cold, only to be greeted by a lovely warm venue and a drink waiting for you. Already a good start!
Think about little touches that will make your guests feel comfortable. A hot chocolate station, mulled wine, blankets for outdoor areas or even a basket of cosy accessories can all add something special.
Just remember to check whether your venue has suitable heating and enough indoor space for guests to mingle comfortably.
4. Go big on the atmosphere
If there's one thing winter weddings do particularly well, it's atmosphere.
With darker evenings, you have the perfect excuse to get creative with your lighting. Think hundreds of candles, fairy lights, hanging installations and statement chandeliers.
You could even use lighting to completely transform your reception space once the evening celebrations begin. A few carefully chosen details can make a venue feel completely different after dark.
Just check your venue's rules before going all in on candles and other decorative lighting.
5. Don't rule out seasonal flowers
Think winter flowers are limited to a few bits of greenery and a Christmas wreath? Think again.
Rich reds, deep burgundy, crisp whites and plenty of texture can all create beautiful seasonal arrangements. You could also introduce berries, branches, dried flowers and interesting foliage for something a little different.
Speak to your florist about what's in season around your wedding date. They can help you find flowers that suit your colour scheme without relying on varieties that might be difficult or expensive to source.
6. Have a backup plan for the weather
We'd all love a picture-perfect snowy wedding, but British winter weather doesn't always follow the Pinterest brief.
Rain, wind, frost and icy conditions are all worth considering, particularly if you're planning an outdoor ceremony or photographs.
Make sure your venue has a suitable indoor alternative and think about how guests will move between different spaces. If you're travelling between locations, allow extra time and make sure everyone knows where they're going.
A little preparation now means you won't be worrying about the weather on the morning of your wedding.
7. Your menu can get in on the winter theme
Summer weddings might have their garden parties and ice cream stations, but winter weddings have plenty of delicious possibilities of their own.
Think comforting starters, warming main courses, indulgent desserts and seasonal ingredients. You could even add a hot chocolate station, a festive cocktail menu or a late-night snack for guests who have been dancing for hours.
And if you're not keen on a traditional wedding cake, winter is a lovely opportunity to do something different. A dessert table, chocolate treats or a cosy pudding station could go down very well!
8. Make your venue work for the season
A winter wedding gives you the chance to really embrace your venue's character.
A country house with roaring fireplaces, a barn filled with warm lighting or a historic building with beautiful interiors can all create a wonderful setting.
When viewing venues, think beyond how the space looks in summer. Is there enough room indoors? Are there cosy areas for guests to relax? Does the venue have somewhere beautiful for photographs if the weather takes a turn?
The right venue can do a lot of the hard work when it comes to creating that winter wedding atmosphere.
9. Don't forget the little details
It's easy to get caught up in the bigger decisions, but the smaller details can make your winter wedding feel even more personal.
Think seasonal wedding favours, festive stationery, cosy lounge areas, personalised blankets or even a little treat for guests to take home.
You don't need to cover everything in snowflakes or Christmas decorations, either. A few subtle seasonal touches can be more than enough to bring everything together.
10. Plan for the party to go on!
Once the evening arrives, you want everyone on the dancefloor, not checking their coats and heading home early because they're cold.
Think about your evening entertainment, how the room will be set up and whether there's somewhere comfortable for guests to take a break from dancing.
You could even add a late-night food station to keep everyone going. Because let's be honest, after a few hours on the dancefloor, everyone appreciates a snack!
So, is a winter wedding for you?
If you love the idea of cosy venues, gorgeous lighting, seasonal details and an excuse to celebrate during the colder months, a winter wedding could be exactly what you're looking for.
The trick is to embrace the season rather than trying to plan a summer wedding in December. Think about the practicalities, get creative with the details and make the day feel like you.
